Sérgio Martins nasceu no Rio de Janeiro, em 1977. Estudou história da arte na University College London (ucl), onde obteve o mestrado em 2005 e o doutorado em 2011, com bolsa do Higher Education Funding Council for England e da UCL Graduate School. Sua tese resultou no livro Constructing an Avant-Garde: Art in Brazil, 1949-1979 (mit Press, 2013). Em 2014, tornou-se professor do Departamento de História da puc-Rio e, entre 2020 e 2022, foi pesquisador visitante na Freie Universität Berlin com bolsa Capes/Humboldt Senior Fellowship. É pesquisador bolsista do cnpq desde 2023 e do programa Jovem Cientista do Nosso Estado (jcne) da faperj desde 2018. Em 2012, organizou o número especial Bursting on the Scene: Looking Back at Brazilian Art do periódico inglês Third Text. Tem artigos publicados também nos periódicos October, artmargins, Artforum, ars, Modos e Novos Estudos Cebrap, entre outros, e contribuiu para os catálogos de mostras como Cildo Meireles (Fundação Serralves/ Museo Nacional Reina Sofia, 2013), Hélio Oiticica: to Organize Delirium (Carnegie Museum/ Art Institute of Chicago/ Whitney Museum, 2016), Alexander Calder: Performing Sculpture (Tate Modern, 2015),  Anna Maria Maiolino (moca Los Angeles, 2017), Lygia Pape: a Multitude of Forms (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2017), Antonio Dias: derrotas e vitórias (mam-SP, 2021) e Louise Bourgeois: Imaginary Conversations (The National Museum, Oslo, 2023).
